In the third of our special masterclass series, Nic and Sarah quiz James about interview techniques.
Whether you’re interviewing someone for a job or you’re hosting a conference, everyone in business needs to know how to get the best stories and information from an interviewee.
Brand Newsroom is a marketing podcast for anyone who has a say in how companies are communicating — covering marketing, content marketing, public relations, media, branding and advertising.
Here are some key take-outs:
- An interviewer’s job (in radio) is to make the interviewee look good, so you have to immerse yourself in the story and the person and be 100 per cent focused on it
- A good interview is one that meets your objectives – whatever those are. Maybe it’s finding the right person for the job; maybe it’s communicating your key messages
- A good interview has chemistry, where you align. A bad interview has no flow
- You don’t have to over-prepare; trust yourself and listen to the answers
- Make sure you ask open questions: “why” questions that require explanation, not questions that require a yes or no answer
- Make the interviewee feel comfortable. If you’re edgy, they’ll pick up on that and be edgy, too.
On My Desk
- Sarah recommended a Forrester report on B2B marketing content strategy
- James recommended The Guardian’s new podcast, Today in Focus
